“Education without social action is a one sided value
because it has no true power potential. Social action without education is a
weak expression of pure energy. Deeds uninformed by educated thought can take
false direction”

Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.
As alumni of Community Harvest Charter School, the importance of culture was embedded into us.
CHCS created a uniquely rich school culture which I believe is inextricably linked to classroom culture and to the success of our school. CHCS students knew that it was a part of our culture, our training to be kind, to lend a helping hand, and to looking out for each other and to love our school. That is why when new students checked into CHARV, we schooled them on what is proper behavior at CHARV. We looked good, felt good, perform
good and become the model of charter schools.

I can’t help but notice since the departure from Los Angeles to Sherman Oaks, the entire concept of culture
and community and the principles we stood on are gone. As a stakeholder, I am dismayed to see the decline in our school. You as the Board have stood by and watched our beloved school fall inspire of the fact that you had been told. The lack of leadership, the lack commitment to our principles is a problem and an utter shame. “What we grow the community harvests” was our motto, but how can you harvest what’s not in the community?

When we were in Los Angeles we volunteered in our community, which I believe made us better citizens, but most importantly a better human being. We volunteered at the Foundation for the Jr Blind, Baldwin Hills Recreation, We fed the hungry and bought toys for sick children. The list can go on; who’s at fault here? Who is going to take the blame for the rapid fall of Community Harvest? Who’s going to rise up in the midst of this debacle and say, “Alright, Let’s do what’s right and bring the school home”
To the board whom I have never seen, I ask: how could you allow the demise of Community Harvest to take place? Is it because the parents who send their children are brown, and black? Is it because they are poor and too concerned about survival? How can you stand boldly and act as if nothing is wrong ? Or don’t you know or do you even care to know? It is you who are to blame for the demise of what we called “OUR HOME”. I would only ask that you own up to your involvement in the lack of maintaining scholastic achievement, unlawful firing of administration, plummeting test scores, etc. WE WANT OUR SCHOOL BACK AND WE WANT YOUR HANDS Off OUR SCHOOL!
Sincerely,
Trayvone Johnson
